After weeks of Republicans’ inaction and unwillingness to work with Democrats on a bipartisan budget bill, funding for the federal government expired at midnight on October 1st, 2025, and our nation entered a government shutdown.
Since Inauguration Day, the Trump-Vance Administration and Elon Musk have taken aggressive action to target the federal workforce — putting the lives of those who rely on Social Security, Medicare, VA benefits, and other vital federal services in danger. The Administration’s OMB Director, Russell Vought, has said he wants to put the federal workforce “in trauma.”
Before coming to Congress, I served in the Virginia General Assembly for 18 sessions. I was the first member of the Virginia House of Delegates to become pregnant and give birth while in office. I remember the logistical, social, and emotional challenges I faced while trying to nurse, pump, and store my breast milk when I went back to work.
