McClellan Votes to Table Marjorie Taylor Greene’s Motion to Vacate
Washington, D.C. - Today, Congresswoman Jennifer McClellan (VA-04) issued the following statement after Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene began the process to compel a vote on a Motion to Vacate Mike Johnson as Speaker of the House:
“Since the start of the 118th Congress, House Republicans have repeatedly demonstrated their inability to govern. Today, Marjorie Taylor Greene, the ringleader of the Chaos Caucus, halted legislative business and forced a vote on her Motion to Vacate the Office of Speaker to remove Mike Johnson. Just over six months ago, fellow Chaos Caucus Member Matt Gaetz pulled a similar stunt that ultimately led to the ouster of Kevin McCarthy as Speaker. The House spent the next three weeks gridlocked, as Republicans fought amongst themselves to determine a replacement.
“The Chaos Caucus is an extreme contingent of the Republican Conference that is more interested in sowing chaos and dysfunction than governing. The American people sent us to Washington to help people and solve problems. The Chaos Caucus blatantly and routinely disregards that responsibility in favor of petty, political stunts and attention. While I vehemently disagree with Speaker Johnson on most issues, and am ready to vote for Hakeem Jeffries to be Speaker, we don’t have time for these continuous MAGA political games and chaos.
“The American people deserve good governance. I voted to table this Motion to Vacate to avoid another Republican-manufactured crisis. The House needs to focus on passing major pieces of legislation to improve the lives of the American people, like the Farm Bill, the Federal Aviation Authorization, the National Defense Authorization Act, and our annual government funding bills – not political theater. I urge House Republicans to abandon the Chaos Caucus clown show and join Democrats in prioritizing people over politics.”
