McClellan Votes to Avoid Government Shutdown, Protect Virginian Families

January 18, 2024

Washington, D.C. – Today, Congresswoman Jennifer McClellan (VA-04) voted in support of the Senate Amendment to H.R. 2872, the Further Additional Continuing Appropriations and Other Extensions Act, to avoid a partial government shutdown and protect hardworking Virginian families.

The most recent Continuing Resolution (CR) maintains the previous version’s “laddered” deadlines and extends current Fiscal Year (FY) 2023 funding levels into March. Under the CR, the following appropriations bills are funded through March 1st, 2024:

  • Agriculture, Rural Development, Food and Drug Administration and Related Agencies
  • Energy and Water Development
  • Military Construction, Veterans Affairs, and Related Agencies
  • Transportation, Housing and Urban Development, and Related AGencies

Funding of the remaining spending bills is extended through March 8th, 2024:

  • Commerce, Justice, Science, and Related Agencies
  • Defense
  • Financial Services and General Government
  • Homeland Security
  • Interior, Environment, and Related Agencies
  • Legislative Branch
  • State, Foreign Operations, and Related Programs.

“Republicans have turned the House into a three-ringed circus with their infighting, baseless impeachment inquiries, and chaotic committee hearings instead of focusing on the issues that matter to the American people. For the third time this Congress, extreme MAGA Republicans drove us to the brink of a government shutdown,” said Congresswoman McClellan. “Yet again, House Democrats delivered the necessary votes to bring the CR across the finish line, protect the interests of the American people, and preserve our nation’s economic stability. However, we cannot continue to operate under these stopgap measures with the constant threat of an impending government shutdown. My Democratic colleagues and I stand ready and willing to work across the aisle to fully fund the government and pass a responsible budget, just as we have attempted to do since the start of the appropriations process. It’s time for Republicans’ ringleader, Speaker Johnson, to abandon his hyper-partisan approach to governing and acknowledge the reality that any viable funding package will be bipartisan.”
