McClellan, Takano Introduce Resolution to Formally Apologize to LGBTQ+ Service Members

June 28, 2024

Washington, D.C. – Today, Representatives Jennifer McClellan (VA-04) and Mark Takano (CA-39) introduced H.Res. 1329 to formally acknowledge and apologize for the mistreatment and discrimination against LGBTQ+ individuals who served the United States through our Armed Forces, civil services, or the Foreign Service.

“For decades, members of the LGBTQ+ community have served our nation with distinction and dignity, yet they were subjected to discrimination and mistreatment because of their sexual orientation or gender identity,” said Congresswoman McClellan. “As we close out Pride Month, I’m working with Congressman Takano and Senators Kaine and Baldwin to acknowledge these historical wrongs and reaffirm our commitment to ensuring that the United States government, Armed Forces, and Foreign Service are welcoming and inclusive environments for every American.”

“For too long, LGBTQ+ people serving our nation in and out of uniform were discriminated against by our own government for who they are and who they love,” said Congressman Takano. “It is critical that we recognize the sins of the past, especially at a time when many would rather forget American history than reckon with its sometimes-difficult realities. This is an important and needed apology.”

On Wednesday, President Biden pardoned thousands of former U.S. service members who were unjustly targeted and removed from military service under “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.”

Senators Tim Kaine (VA) and Tammy Baldwin (WI) introduced identical companion legislation earlier this month.

This is the latest in both members’ work to ensure equal rights and protections for all Americans. Takano serves as a Co-Chair of the Congressional Equality Caucus, and McClellan is a proud member. Takano is the sponsor of the Equality Act, legislation McClellan cosponsors to extend federal non-discrimination protections to the LGBTQ+ community.

This resolution was endorsed by the Human Rights Campaign, the American Federation of Government Employees, and the National Treasury Employees Union.
