McClellan Statement on Vought’s Confirmation as OMB Director

February 6, 2025

Washington, D.C. – Today, Congresswoman Jennifer McClellan (VA-04) issued the following statement after Russell Vought was confirmed as the Director of the White House Office of Management and Budget (OMB):

“Our federal workforce deserves our nation’s utmost respect for their tireless service to the American people. Tonight, Senate Republicans, at the behest of President Trump, betrayed our federal workforce by confirming Russell Vought as the Director of OMB.

“Russell Vought, a man who stated he wants to put our federal workforce in trauma, has no business holding the position of OMB Director. The OMB plays a critical role in shaping policies that affect millions of Americans, from federal spending priorities to social safety net programs, and much more. Vought is the architect of Project 2025, the playbook from which these attacks and the illegal federal funding freeze were taken.

“His confirmation comes on the heels of relentless attacks by the Trump-Vance Administration on our federal workforce. The Administration’s actions and nomination of Vought demonstrate a blatant hostility to federal employees. His confirmation will have detrimental, far-reaching impacts on the federal government and the American people. As a Member of Congress from the Commonwealth of Virginia, home to one of the largest federal employee populations in the nation, I vehemently oppose this confirmation and stand ready to work with my Democratic colleagues to use every tool available to us to limit the harm he can do.”

Earlier this week, McClellan took to the House floor to slam Vought’s nomination and participated in a roundtable with civil service organizations to coordinate action against the Trump-Vance Administration’s attacks on the federal workforce. Last month, McClellan led the Virginia House Democratic delegation in a letter urging the Trump-Vance Administration to rescind or revoke their federal hiring freeze.
