McClellan Statement on Israel and Gaza

April 12, 2024

Washington, D.C. – Today, Congresswoman Jennifer McClellan (VA-04) issued the following statement regarding the Israel-Hamas conflict:

“Hamas’ devastating attack on October 7th resulted in the death of over 1,200 innocent Israeli citizens and sparked one of the worst conflicts in the Middle East in recent history. Over the past seven months, over 30,000 Palestinians have been killed, and millions more have been forcibly displaced from their homes. More than 130 hostages, including American and Israeli citizens, remain in Hamas’ custody. The ongoing conflict in Gaza, continued detainment of hostages, and devastating loss of civilian life are untenable and must end.

“Israel has a right to defend itself and neutralize the terrorists responsible for the October 7th attack, but it must do more to curb civilian casualties and facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid into Gaza. The ongoing deaths of civilians, including humanitarian aid workers, are tragic and unacceptable. Israel must take immediate steps to deconflict military operations and the delivery of humanitarian aid. Furthermore, I urge Israel to heed the Biden-Harris Administration’s warnings and forego ground operations in Rafah. Without specific, measurable, and concrete plans to protect innocent civilians, a ground offensive in Rafah would be a mistake that would inevitably lead to further loss of life and instability in the region.

“Today, I am calling for an immediate bilateral ceasefire that leads to the release of hostages, delivery of robust humanitarian aid into Gaza, and a path to long-term stability and a peaceful two-state solution. The first brokered hostage release allowed for a temporary ceasefire, increased humanitarian aid into Gaza, and a rapid de-escalation of operations by militant groups. Not only would a second truce allow for the safe return of hostages, but it is the best option for a long-term cessation of hostilities.

“I commend the Biden-Harris Administration for their tireless efforts to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza while facilitating negotiations between Israel and Hamas in cooperation with Egypt and Qatar. I urge everyone involved to reach an agreement as quickly as possible that paves the way towards sustainable peace in the region.”
