McClellan Opposes Partisan Legislative Branch Funding Bill
Washington, D.C. – Today, Congresswoman Jennifer McClellan (VA-04) voted against House Republicans’ H.R. 8772, the Legislative Branch Appropriations Act, to stand up for hardworking congressional staff.
“House Republicans continue to push their extreme partisan agenda in must-pass pieces of legislation,” said Congresswoman McClellan. “Their harmful provisions threaten our ability to recruit and retain diverse, qualified staffers, dismantle DEI initiatives, and undermine workplace protections for the LGBTQ+ community. I voted against this harmful MAGA wishlist. I urge House Republicans to abandon their partisan politics and come to the negotiation table in good faith.”
The Legislative Branch Appropriations Act of 2025 would:
- Creates a license for employees to discriminate against LGBTQI+ people under the guise of religious liberty and prevents the federal government from adequately responding.
- Blocks programs and activities that promote diversity, equity, and inclusion training across the Legislative Branch, on the heels of House Republicans closing the Office of Diversity and Inclusion.
- Fails to confront the climate crisis by removing longstanding provisions that reduce waste and protect the environment.
- Bars Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) recipients from employment in the Legislative Branch.
- Allows a few Members of Congress who perform medical or dental services to be paid in addition to their congressional salary
H.R. 8772 failed on a bipartisan vote of 205 to 213.
