McClellan Introduces Bill to Grant Federal Recognition to the Nottoway Indian Tribe of Virginia
Washington, D.C. – In case you missed it, this Indigenous Peoples’ Day: Congresswoman Jennifer McClellan (VA-04) introduced H.R. 5327, the Nottoway Indian Tribe of Virginia Federal Recognition Act, to extend federal recognition to the Nottoway Indian Tribe of Virginia.
The Nottoway Indian Tribe of Virginia existed for centuries in present-day Dinwiddie, Isle of Wight, Nottoway, Sussex and Southampton counties and maintains a strong presence in the Commonwealth. Although the Virginia Council of Indians granted state tribal recognition to the Tribe in 2010, the federal government has yet to grant it federal recognition.
“The Nottoway Indian Tribe of Virginia represents a crucial part of our culture and history, and its time-honored traditions and legacy deserve recognition at every level of government,” said Congresswoman McClellan. “That’s why I introduced legislation to federally recognize the Nottoway Indian Tribe and acknowledge its Tribal sovereignty, ensuring its members receive all the rights and protections that come with such recognition. I’m honored to partner with Chief Allston and the Nottoway Indian Tribe to help bring their concerns and priorities to Washington.”
“The time has come for a correction in history with federal acknowledgement for the Nottoway Indian Tribe of Virginia. Understanding the reason for the centuries of adversity that indigenous people have endured is complicated,” said Chief Allston of the Nottoway Indian Tribe of Virginia. “In spite of the challenges that tried to erase us, our Tribe has lived quietly in the territory of our ancestors. For generations, we have worked to support our families, served in the armed forces and contributed our talents for the advancement of the United States. The time is now for acknowledgement. Thank you, Congresswoman McClellan, for your continued support, concern and understanding in advancing federal acknowledgement for the Nottoway Indian Tribe of Virginia.”
Rep. McClellan has coordinated with the Nottoway Indian Tribe and celebrated Indigenous communities throughout her tenure in Congress. In the 118th Congress, she introduced similar legislation to grant federal recognition to the Nottoway Indian Tribe of Virginia. In September, Rep. McClellan attended the Nottoway Indian Tribe’s annual Powwow, where she announced the introduction of H.R. 5327 to members of the Tribe.
