Regardless of party, people agree that our immigration system needs significant reform. We need to work together to build an efficient pathway for legal immigration and asylum claims to afford everyone an opportunity to succeed in this country. However, under the Trump Administration, we have moved further and further from effective bipartisan legislation, instead watching ICE and Border Patrol run wild in American communities with little oversight. Overly aggressive and often untrained agents have detained people — including American citizens — without due process, entered homes without warrants, terrorized immigrant communities, and stirred chaos and violence in our streets. ICE has shot protestors trying to protect their neighbors and has stood idly by through dozens of deaths in horrendous detention center conditions, all while blocking appropriate investigation and congressional oversight of their actions.
It is imperative, now more than ever, that we protect our communities from operations that make people afraid to leave their houses and erode trust in our local and state law enforcement. The Department of Homeland Security cannot be allowed to ignore the Constitution and do as they please. I will continue to fight against these grave abuses of power by demanding accountability and fair, independent investigations of ICE. I stand alongside all those who have continued to sound the alarm on this lawlessness and will continue to advocate for measures that will restrict and end this Administration’s heightened campaign of terror in Virginia and around the country.
